A Review of 2011

Well, 2011 went by like that! and the movies too. I completely (on purpose) avoided the wave of superhero films of 2011, mostly because I always wind up being disappointed, and this year with the premiere of Green Lantern, which happens to be my all time favourite superhero, I was extra cautious not to be drawn in to the magic of wanting to see something you love on the big screen. So I am not mentioning Thor, Cap America and so on because of the simple reason that I haven't seen them. The films I did see that are classified as sci-fi or Fantasy I will mention however, and I'll start with the worst.
Number one hands down forever and ever is Transformers: Dark of the Moon
It is very very rare for me to want to walk out of a screening.. and I was so so so so close with this third installment of the Transformers series. The whole film annoyed me, the most uninteresting story ever, actors who can not act (What was Malkovich and McDormand doing in there I wonder) and roughly one hour too long. I remember thinking, when the bad one and the good one were having that last fight 'Yes yes!' not because, finally good will defeat evil… no, because I knew this was the end of the film. The worst thing however is how Michael Bay portray women, that we see what he considers beauty. The female lead is in the film solely because of her looks, she was a Horrid actress who most of the time was filmed in slow motion from head to toe, making the reason why she is in the film completely transparent. Also, during the period of time she is kidnapped she change her outfit and shoes two or three times.. nice kidnapper to provide changes of clothes I'd say. So, Transformers 3 is not only the most unnecessary film of 2011 it is also amongst the worst films I have seen in a long long time.
The runner up for worst of 2011 is Sucker Punch, man oh man, I can not believe Zack Snyder made this, or that he wanted to make this one. The whole film is scattered, disjointed and made no sense, it was basically a fetish fest for people who like women in sexy school uniforms carrying big weapons while MTV-music is thundering out the speakers, hence, not for me. What I have to say about Snyder is that he has can create visual beauty like no one else, as we have seen in many of films, unfortunately thats not enough in Sucker Punch. The other thing I must mention is the only ray of light in the film was.. Oscar Isaac. I am just IN love with him, what an amazing actor, I am positive he will be one of the greatest one day. Despite wonderful Isaac this film falls flat from minute one, it is trying to be artistic and deep with the different layers of dream worlds and real worlds but it is just not belieavable, good or entertaining.
Best of 2011 is hard, since I have avoided quite a lot of films because of my snobbiness, and because of that I have missed a few that apparently was really good (from reliable sources) like Rise of the Planet of the Apes and Real Steel. I did see X-men New Class, and it was great, Michael Fassenbender is a rising star in every sense of the word, and I'd watch anything with him in it. And I really enjoyed Super 8, which had the greatest Goonies/Stand by me feel over it. However for me the big hit of 2011 in sci-fi or fantasy film is without a doubt the last Harry Potter, I know I know Miss Lame coming through, and yeah I am a hugh Potter-fan so maybe my choice isn't bias but yeah, thats my choice. I think it gave all Potter-fans out there a satisfactory ending, of course I could never be exactly like the book but we all know that, and I didn't mind in this last part of the Saga. I sat there in the theater crying behind my 3D glasses and afterwards I was so satisfied and couldn't have asked for more.
Besides those and a few hits here and there the big prize in awesomeness in sci-fi/fantasy have to go to TV-series 2011, I must say. Both Fringe and Supernatural had their best season yet and amazing new shows like Grimm, Once Upon a Time, American Horror Story and Game of Thrones made their debut, So Series won over Cinema in 2011 hands down.
And what is happening in 2012 to look forward to? Batman, Avengers, Prometheus, and all the continuations of my fav shows, seems its going to be a great year for cinema..still, I said that about 2011 as well.. so, we'll see.
